Whale Rider, directed by Niki Caro, won awards at independent movie theatre festivals for three consecutive years after its release in 2002, a gigantic with two accompanying nominees. What made this simple-seeming movie from brisk Zealand so amazing? I believe it’s the singular way it portrays the struggle of a strict tribal family lamentable into the future, and a girl who is caught in the middle. Even though it is a foreign film, everyone can relate to the emotions and hardships expressed in it; that’s what makes it great.
This movie, to my understanding, is about the changes presented by a new generation and an older, more than proper generation learning to accept these changes. It was about overcoming the obstacles determined out before you and the way you overcome hem. It was about looking at beyond the surface. Whale Rider won a community’s Choice Award the year it came out, two awards at the 2003 Sundance adopt Festival, and won a Best Foreign Film award in 2004. It also earned praise from critics worldwide.
In the opening scene, you see a woman who gives birth to a boy and a girl. What the audience doesn’t know is that the boy was the next first born in a long line to be the leader, or chief, of his tribe.



Problems with this picture occur at one time; starting when the infant boy dies, taking his mother with him. Now, in that location was just a baby girl. This created an immediate problem because thither was no boy to lead the tribe, and no wife to furnish to conceive another child. This angered the grandfather, Koro, the chief, more than anyone. The boy was to be named Paikea, after his distant descendant and leader. Instead, the name went to the girl, against Koro’s will. This was the day that Koro said his family was falling apart.
