English 112 Women and Society: An Interpretation of Charlotte Brontes Jane Eyre In 1847, Charlotte Bronte publish Jane Eyre, her most successful work of fiction (Gordon 161). Almost immediately, public reaction to the book was strong. Though many praised its eloquent drift and brooding tone, others responded with shock and outrage (Gordon 162). That is because Jane Eyre is a novel that challenged widely-held beliefs virtually the role of women. In place of meekness and servility, it implies that women should pursue acquirement and independence. Instead of seclusion inside the family household, it suggests women should be able to draw up themselves and their own needs first, just as men take a shit always done. Even so, she is taunted by self-doubts and insecurity.
