Sammys Actions at A & P
John Updikes forgetful story A & P is set in a small town grocery store with Sammy as a cashier. Three girls in bathing suits come into the grocery store, which may seem a little odd as they argon nowhere near a beach, but it is summer time. Sammy and Stokesie (who is the opposite cashier) watch the girls as they stroll through the store face for the one item they need. Sammys actions show how one individual can brook up for what they believe in.
At the final stage of A & P Sammy shows his frustration on how the girls in the store had been treated by his manager Lengel that he quits in order to stand up for what he believed in. When Lengel comes to Sammys register to say to the girls, Girls, this isnt the beach (19) and then later on say the uniform thing and belittle the girls that way. While Sammy was bagging up the girls groceries hes thinking about what he is qualifying to do; pass a half and a penny into her condition pink palm, and nestle the herrings in a bag and gizmo its neck and hand it over, all the time thinking (19). after Sammy has ended the transaction his decision on what he is going to do has been made. As the girls leave the store in a hurry Sammy says to Lengel I quit.
Lengle was surprised by Sammy quitting. Sammy defends himself by saying You didnt have to embarrass them (20). Sammy thinks that Lengle could have handled the concomitant better than the way he did.
When Lengle says to Sammy Youll feel this for the rest of your life history (20) and Sammy knows its true and knows that this moment will be a moment he looks back to all his life and smooth upon. Sammy will know how it felt to stand up for some other people and do the right thing. He realizes how much this is authentically going to affect his life from now on as the story ends my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be me time to come (20).
